Job Title: Technician Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt Job Role: HVAC Licensed* Funding Source: Pay Grade: OS 9 Department/School: Maintenance Function: Business – Facility Services Reports to: Director of Grounds and Maintenance HR Date Approved: July 2008 HR Date Revised: February 2024 SUMMARY: A licensed HVAC technician in Texas is a professional who installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for the safe condition and operation of all HVAC systems in District facilities. Requires a valid HVAC license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which requires passing an exam and meeting certain education and experience requirements*. *To be eligible for licensure, you must meet one of the following experience requirements:
  • You have at least 48 months of practical experience in air-conditioning and refrigeration-related work under the supervision of a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in the past 72 months, Or

  • Maintain a commitment to the District mission; model District expectations through personal leadership and actively support the efforts of others to achieve District goals. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Maintenance and Repair
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Repair, replace, or calibrate controls including thermostats and switches.
  • Install new heating and air conditioning systems and components and relocate and expand existing HVAC systems as needed.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install duct work and piping according to code specifications and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC equipment, including changing of filters and cleaning condensers and coils.
  • Perform duct cleaning and air quality testing as needed.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials including maintaining coolant dispensing records to meet federal requirements. Safety
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures. Other Duties
  • Receive and complete work orders. Select materials and hardware, make time and materials cost estimates, and maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Select materials and estimate costs.
  • Inspect completed jobs and maintain inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Assist Energy Manager to complete energy conservation surveys to realize most efficient, cost-effective use of HVAC energy.
  • Respond to emergency calls.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License with a clear record of safe driving
  • Valid HVAC license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)
  • License Classes
  • The?Class A license?allows you to work on any size unit.
  • The?Class B license?allows you to work on cooling systems of 25 tons and under, and heating systems of 1.5 million BTUs/hour and under. Experience:
  • Three (3) years successful experience in HVAC field SPECIAL KNOWLEGDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of HVAC repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently
