SUMMARY:
Provide Special Education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Instructional Strategies
Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process for each student assigned.
Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
Implement instruction in academic and adaptive skills, using strategies that accommodate various learning styles and disabilities.
Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist Special Education students in regular classes with assignments.
Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
Participate in selection of materials, equipment, and other instructional media.
Student Growth and Development
Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
Provide or supervise personal care to include diapering, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
Be a positive role model for students.
Classroom Management and Organization
Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Communication
Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Professional Growth and Development
Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
Comply with State, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Other
Maintain confidentiality.
Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs; compile, maintain, file, and secure all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.
Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.
Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with required Special Education endorsements for subject and level assigned.
Valid Texas Teacher Certificate in English as a Second Language (preferred?and will be required for contract renewal)?
Experience:
Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience

Knowledge of core academic subject assigned
Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Knowledge of Special Education Laws and Regulations: Understanding IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), IEP (Individualized Education Program) process, and other relevant laws
Knowledge of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and positive behavior support strategies
Knowledge of techniques for differentiated instruction, multisensory teaching, and individualized learning plans
Familiarity with various physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbances
Skills in conducting formal and informal assessments to track student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
Ability to modify teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs of students
Ability to work effectively with general education teachers, parents and other stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple IEPs, lesson plans, and classroom activities efficiently
Ability to evaluate student progress and adapt teaching strategies accordingly
Possesses patience and compassion essential for creating a supportive and understanding classroom environment
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
