Description | SUMMARY:
Direct the operation of the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Instruction
- Provides services and resources that develop students’ literature appreciation and a love of reading, as well as helping students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using technology and information to solve problems.
- Serves as a resource on District approved digital resources.
- Advises teachers and administrators on the use of authentic technology, online resources, digital content, and print- and non-print- based library media resources.
- Manages the Library Learning Commons’ instructional material resources and technology resources.
- Collaborates with faculty to assist with research, lesson planning, integration of authentic technology and ordering materials that align with District curriculum.
- Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students and other library users to help them locate resources and use research techniques. Serve as an information resource for users of print and digital library/media center materials.
- Work with teachers to convey appropriate use of materials and help schedule materials for classroom instructional use. Encourage the appropriate use of video programing and other print and digital media for educational purposes.
- Design, develop, and present staff development for teachers on the availability and use of campus and District learning resources.
- Plan schedule to ensure availability of library and materials to students throughout the school day.
- Develop a collaborative relationship with campus teachers based on a shared commitment to instructional initiatives.
- Provide staff development and instructional support for teachers in using print, online and digital resources.
- Provide professional learning opportunities, as needed, in the areas of research, authentic technology integration, digital resources, and technology devices.
- Provide learning opportunities for students related to new technologies and the use and production of a variety of media formats.
- Conduct classes in library science skills and research skills; ensure lessons are integrated with the District curriculum and supported with appropriate technology.
Library Programs
- Plan and implement an effective school library program that meets identified needs and create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students.
- Make recommendations for acquisitions and manage the processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of library/media resources.
- Assist teachers in preparation of curriculum guides, lesson plans, and bibliographies.
- Develop and maintain up-to-date resource files including instructional program schedules and other community resources.
- Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library/media center program and make changes based on the findings.
Student Management
- Carry out student discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations.
- Model and promote digital citizenship, safety, and adherence to copyright and fair use requirements.
Administration
- Compile, budget, and provide cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Comply with Local Board Policy, federal and state laws, and State Board of Education rule.
- Comply with all District and campus routines and regulations.
- Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of instructional resources both technology and print based medium.
Policy, Reports, and Law
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs; compile, maintain, file, and secure all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
- Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.
- Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.
- Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
- Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- Master’s Degree in Library Science
- Valid Texas School Librarian Certificate or participation in a state-accredited master’s program with permission of advisor for Emergency School Librarian Certification
- Valid Texas Teacher Certificate in English as a Second Language (ESL) – (preferred)
Experience:
- Two (2) years successful classroom teaching experience
